Nathan Trott kept a clean sheet in West Ham United’s emphatic 3-0 Premier League 2 triumph away to Manchester United yesterday to make a flawless start to the New Year.

The Bermudian goalkeeper made a handful of saves for West Ham’s under-23 side at Leigh Sports Village, which the visitors won comfortably thanks to second half goals from Grady Diangana, Toni Martínez and Martin Samuelsen, to complete an impressive league double over United having also won the first encounter 4-2.

The home side played most of the second half with ten men after Luca Ercolani was dismissed in the 53rd minute for kicking Diangana in the face.

Trott was called into action as early as the fifth minute when he came off his line to clear a dangerous through-ball and went on to make three saves during his team’s dominant display.

West Ham took the lead in the 51st minute when Diangana poked home Samuelsen’s rebound that cannoned off the bar.

The hosts suffered a further setback two minutes later when Ercolani was sent off.

Martínez doubled the visitors lead in the 69th minute when he headed home Diangana’s brilliant cross before Samuelson added a third a minute later to kill the game off.

“Overall, we are really delighted with the performance, and the result as well,” Liam Manning, the West Ham academy coach, told the club’s website.

“The first half, at 11 vs 11, we dominated the game. The possession statistics show we had loads of the ball and then in the second half, the red card plays a little part, but we were still on top and I think we started the second half well.

“I’ll give the boys credit. They were at it all over Christmas and their work rate during that period was fantastic. They got the rewards of that tonight.”
