Cookie entrepreneurs offer frozen dough
Two women have come together to offer locals the opportunity to make homemade cookies without getting their hands dirty.
The Bermuda Cookie Company, with the Island Girls branding, was started by Bermudians Alicia Resnik and Silvia Darling in March last year.
Since then, the business has taken off.
They are the overall winners of The Bermudian’s Made in Bermuda Awards 2017.
When asked how they got the idea to start the business, they mentioned that it was naturally something they did for their children.
Between the two ladies they have five teenage sons, who have always enjoyed their mothers’ cookies which inspired them into starting the business.
They combined their baking talent to create a unique product for the island.
Now they have added frozen cookie dough to their product line.
Ms Darling said: “We decided to make the frozen dough, because people wanted to have their cookies freshly made.”
The dough is sold in containers, which are stocked among the frozen foods at various grocery stores on the island.
Ms Resnik said: “There are between 12-15 scoops for each container and the frozen scoops can last up to a year.
“We make traditional cookies like chocolate chip, peanut butter and sugar, and cookies with a Bermudian twist — Half Hot, Want More, With the Works and Hog Wilde about Chocolate, for example.”
In addition they also make a gluten-free chocolate chip cookies.
The cookies are made fresh with no preservatives added.
The Island Girls’ signature cookie — popular at corporate events — is the Half Hot Ginger cookie, which is a ginger cookie glazed with Black Seal Rum.
All the cookie flavours can be bought either baked or in frozen dough form. The pair also sell other baked goods such as cupcakes, cakes and brownies.
Offering cookie platters for parties has also become very popular along with other events such as weddings, party treat bags and baskets.
When asked which flavour they prefer, the ladies differed.
Ms Resnik said: “I can’t resist the Butt-Kicking Peanut Butter and the Hog Wilde about Chocolate.”
Ms Darling said: “As the name says Silvia’s Chocolate Caramel Decadence. I love dark chocolate and caramel. This cookie has it all, plus a swirl of fudge.”
The pair try to make the cookies as authentic as possible with every flavour of cookie representing the name.
In the future they would like to have a store front, but for now they are happy with how their business is developing.
They offer delivery of their baked goods to customers who contact them by phone or e-mail or through their website. For large orders, they ask for two days in advance.
