Pair charged with assaulting prison officer

Two men have been charged with assaulting a prison officer more than two years ago.

Mikiel Thomas, 22, and Josef Smith, 32, pleaded not guilty in Magistrates’ Court on Friday to assaulting David Lawes and causing actual bodily harm.

The incident was alleged to have happened on July 18, 2018 at Westgate prison.

Senior magistrate Juan Wolffe adjourned the case until August 31 and remanded the two in custody.
